Sean Hemmerle was born in Tempe, Arizona, in 1966 and is based in New York. After serving in the US Army, he studied photography and graduated with an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 1997, which laid the foundation for his artistic career.
Hemmerle's photographic work covers a wide thematic range: documentary portraits and images from conflict and war zones such as Afghanistan and Iraq; urban landscapes of the American Rust Belt; and conceptual projects on everyday architecture and public space. His series of portraits made in Baghdad — of engineers, teachers, merchants, fixers and scavengers among the ruins of war — sits alongside images of American newsrooms such as Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine's New York offices, and later work documenting sites such as a Reaper drone hangar at Holloman Air Force Base.
He has exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography in New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His work has appeared in publications including Time and The New York Times Magazine.
