Peter Keetman (1916, Elberfeld – 2005, Marquartstein) occupies a central place in post-war photographic modernism in Germany. He trained at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Lichtbildwesen in Munich from 1935 to 1937, then worked as an assistant to the industrial and portrait photographers Gertrud Hesse in Duisburg and Carl Heinz Schmeck in Aachen. Called up as a railway pioneer in 1940, he returned from the Second World War in 1944 seriously injured, resuming his studies at the Staatslehranstalt's master class in 1947–48.
In 1949 Keetman was a founding member of the avant-garde photography group fotoform, playing a decisive role in shaping what became known as 'subjective photography' — work built on formal reduction, the creative power of light, and the subjectivity of individual experience. His photographs were featured prominently in Otto Steinert's landmark 1951 exhibition and photobook Subjektive Fotografie. His work escapes easy categorization: he documented the reconstruction of Munich, explored the hidden structures of landscape and natural phenomena, and translated the dynamism of West Germany's economic miracle into abstract imagery.
Particularly celebrated is his 1953 series Eine Woche im Volkswagenwerk (A Week at the Volkswagen Factory), made at the Wolfsburg plant, in which the geometry of assembly-line technology and car-body parts is rendered through radical cropping and perspective. Equally significant is his series Schwingungen (Vibrations), a touchstone in the history of experimental abstract photography. Throughout his career Keetman moved fluidly between free artistic photography and applied commissioned work.
The Museum Folkwang and the F. C. Gundlach Foundation dedicated a comprehensive retrospective, Peter Keetman: Gestaltete Welt (Designed World), to the photographer in 2016 on the occasion of his hundredth birthday, traveling to Hamburg and Munich. He received the David Octavius Hill Medal in 1981 and the Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography in 1991.
